News from the Junior School

14/10/2011

This term all the classes in the Junior School are focussing on the theme 'Shapes'. Everyday we see shapes in our real world, from road signs to shapes of boxes in our cabinets. Learning to recognise shapes helps set the foundation that everyone learns early in their childhood so that they are able to analyse things in our world.

The general outline of this thematic unit is for the students to become familiar with the different characteristics of shapes. The activities will help the students to focus on different 2D shapes and their properties. All of the Junior classes have begun to explore the shapes in their environment and have created some interesting shape artworks. Junior E1 students have been looking for circles in their environment and doing a range of activities with circles. Junior E2 have created a class shape friend called 'Cynthia Circle' and made some caterpillars using circles of different sizes. Junior E5 have made some very interesting circle creations such as glasses and mobiles with pipe cleaners. Junior E4 have been exploring different shapes and have used squares, circles, triangles and rectangles to create houses and other terrific pictures.
